It's unfortunate that many people don't realize the importance of having their dryer vents cleaned and properly maintained. A plugged dryer vent can cause excessive heat build-up not only within the vent but also within the drying appliance, creating a situation that could possibly result in a fire. There are many things that can cause vents to be clogged:
Another problem that happens quite regularly is that small birds often find a way into the vents and use that area for nesting. This is highly unsanitary as they carry many germs and parasites, especially in their droppings which eventually accumulate and block off the vent entirely. We strongly recommend cleaning and installing a "bird barricade" to ensure that your dryer vent duct system doesn't end up as a nesting site.
A good way to prevent a dryer fire, is with a thorough inspection by the professionals at Skyline.
An effective system increases performance and optimal airflow. Having your system properly installed and maintained will help ensure this airflow. Skyline's suspended access and rigging technicians will check to ensure there is proper airflow, and that the right equipment is in use.
The benefits derived from an annual vent cleaning program:
Most high rise units contain stacked washer and dryer sets. These dryers, according to the dryer manufacturers, are only able to push a maximum of 20 ft. Due to space restrictions we normally find these runs going 30′ to 50′.
These units have 4″ ducting coming from the dryer going into “corrugated” ducting which is 1 1/2″ X 12″ and laid in the concrete ceiling.
This ducting must be maintained. If a block forms in the corrugated ducting it is very difficult to remove as you can not cut into the concrete because it is structural. Outside vents have screening. The ONLY way to clean it is to remove and clean from the outside, which is our cleaning methodology.
We have developed cleaning tools specifically for corrugated ducting. On most high-rises this must be done by boatswains chair or swing stage. We have certified suspended access and rigging technicians to successfully complete this work. Once we have access to the exterior grill, our custom cleaning tools do the rest. We insert our tools into the ducting and feed them in until they reach where the corrugated ducting and 4″ ducting meet. This moves the lint to the outside making cleaning easy.
